Things I Want To Tell My Kids
(Photo: Glenn Keelty)First of all, I want you to know that I love you. Endlessly. Your very existence is an expression of my love. Always find your joy, focus on your own expression and don't worry about the limits of others. I love you.
It's Thanksgiving. Your mom and I are celebrating our fifth or sixth one together; I can't remember. I do remember that there are certain times in the year that I'm flooded with memories, emotions, and forgotten euphoria. I've been on the road, so to speak, for over 12 years now. I can tell you that the world offers incredible sights and experiences to be had, but once or twice a year, I miss my family dearly.
Travel, travel, and travel. See the world! But never forget your family. Hold on to those that are dear. I miss them all badly right now, and I long to meet you guys maybe in some ploy to recreate the love I have for my family. Regardless of my selfish motivations, though, I love you. I hope you never forget that. I can't promise I'll be a great dad. But I can promise that I will put everything that I am into being that dad, and I promise you that I will always love you, and I did always love you.
Your mom needs me to dice onions. Hold that thought.
...
That's it today. You don't have to make it home every year for the holidays. I want you to be true to yourselves and explore the things that give you your full expression of living. But do remember your family, and know that it's enriching to reconnect with them.
Play holiday music occasionally, it's steeped in emotions and memories. I'll make sure of that ;) I hope you use it to reconnect with those memories, the memories of us, and ground yourselves a couple times a year.
I love you. I always have. And I always will. If I never meet you, I have already met you. Don't hold grudges, and don't resist the course of life. Everything around you is your choosing. If you remember that, you will hold the keys to endless creation.
I love you.
